On one of our early sails this season, we forgot to pack food. Such a rookie move. A few hours in, we were loving the weather and suffering with our empty stomachs. Lesson learned: no day sail is complete without food and drink!
We keep it simple, finger-friendly, and gluten-free — and honestly, it’s one of the best parts of the day. It’s like a floating picnic!
Here are three lunches we actually eat aboard Red Sky, and why they’ve earned a spot in our cooler.
Note: Food pics are all AI, except for the rum pic at the end. That one’s all me 🙂
1. Snack Platter
This one’s for grazing — our go-to when we want variety and minimal prep/cleanup.

What’s in it:
- Hummus
- Corn chips or gluten-free crackers
- Sliced peppers & sugar snap peas
- Olives
- Cubes of sharp cheddar
- Grapes or berries
Why we love it:
Easy to pull together, everything stays fresh, it’s fun to eat, and it feels kind of fancy even when you’re wearing a fleece and a little windburned.
2. Cold Cut Roll-Ups & Fruit
A gluten-free favorite that packs well and satisfies when we’re starving.
What’s in it:
- Turkey or ham slices rolled around cheese sticks
- Cold apple slices or orange segments
- Nuts. Any kind of nuts
- A few squares of dark chocolate (just because)
Why we love it:
Protein keeps us going, fruit adds hydration, and it’s totally one-hand friendly.
3. Cool Crunch Lettuce Cups
This one’s great if we’re feeling a little more organized and are able to prep the night before.

What’s in it:
- Romaine or butter lettuce leaves (as the cups)
- Tuna or chicken salad
- Sugar snap peas on the side
- Oranges or berries to finish
Why we love it:
Super refreshing on a hot day and easy to portion out. Plus, it keeps us from feeling weighed down during or after the sail.
Final tip:
Pack everything in small, reusable containers with cold packs, and don’t forget plenty of water — plus a beverage treat or two. (Rum, anyone?)
