High Seas and High Flyers: Experiencing the Chicago Air and Water Show

Every time we travel from Iowa to sail on Lake Michigan, it takes a moment to get my head in the game. There’s always a lot to do and consider, making the process pretty intense. But the more time we spend on the boat, the easier that switch becomes. Still basking in the afterglow of our recent crossing, I felt bold and optimistic as we prepped for a day on Lake Michigan.

I was going to need that “bold and optimistic” attitude because the waves that day were around 5 to 7 feet, with northwest winds blowing at 20 to 25 knots—a dynamic and exciting backdrop for the Chicago Air and Water Show we were about to witness!

The day was extra special because we had the wonderful privilege of hosting Kent’s family for this amazing spectacle: his mother, sister, brother-in-law, and niece! Notably, we had a pilot among us! My brother-in-law, a former Air Force pilot, served as our color commentator for the day!

The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the Blue Angels. Their precision and skill were truly awe-inspiring, and having a pilot in the family added an extra layer of excitement and insight to the experience. The combination of the thrilling airshow and the dynamic sea state made for an unforgettable day on Lake Michigan.

Here are some pics:

The Blue Angels approaching from the east.
Being out on the water was an incredible vantage point. The sky was the stage and we got to see the whole thing!
The good seats!
Sensory overload!! The sunshine, the sea, and the smell of jet fuel. The roar of the engines shook my internal organs!
Yes, incredible timing on my part 😆 These planes were flying the opposite directions!!
Is there a better place for an air show than the Chicago skyline? I think not!!
It’s very special to be able to take my mother-in-law out in the boat! Fortunately, she is a champ, even in crazy conditions! Kent was at the helm during most of the show so that I could spectate and take pictures! He looks chill, but the wind and the waves were nothing short of a battle!
Note the inversion. Also note the floating spectators. This show draws a million spectators. I gotta believe a good chunk of that number is on the water!
Sky painting!

The Chicago Skyline!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
