How to make a Paloma – The National Drink of Mexico!

Today is the start of National Hispanic Heritage month and I’m here to celebrate! Admittedly, I only learned of National Hispanic Heritage month recently, but since my mother was born in Ecuador, I’d like to take this opportunity to recognize and lift up the richness of Hispanic culture and its delicious contributions!

I would be remiss if I didn’t confess that the reason I even got on to the Paloma is because one day, I googled “low calorie cocktails” and the Paloma showed up on the list. (I also love grapefruit so it really worked out for me!)

Does it surprise you to learn that the Paloma – Spanish for “dove” – is the national drink of Mexico? Most people would guess the Margarita, but in my opinion, the Paloma is a beautiful blend of essential Mexican flavors.

It’s so easy to make, I made this one at home!

Picture of a Paloma the author made at home. It's a pink cocktail garnished with an intensely colored grapefruit wheel.

Here’s a simple recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 1.5 oz tequila (blanco)
  • 1 oz fresh lime juice
  • 1 oz fresh grapefruit juice
  • A splash of grapefruit soda (try Squirt or Jarritos for an authentic touch)
  • Salt or Tajin (chili-lime seasoning) for rimming the glass
  • Grapefruit or lime wedges for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Rim a highball glass with salt or Tajin
  2. Fill the glass with ice cubes
  3. Pour in the tequila, fresh lime, and fresh grapefruit juice over the ice
  4. Top it off with a splash of grapefruit soda
  5. Gently stir to blend the flavors
  6. Garnish with a lime wheel

I’m going to imagine we’re sailing on the Sea of Cortez! Cheers!!
