Kent Won a Contest!!

A few months ago, Offshore Sailing School (OSS) announced they were going to run a contest in celebration of their 60th anniversary. They invited their graduates to “create an original photograph or artwork (painting or sketch) that illustrates or was inspired by taking a sailing or powerboating certification course…. Include a 100-word, typed essay about how that experience has changed your life.”

Invitation accepted!

As we’ve mentioned before, we attended sailing school in February and we’ve talked at length about what an incredible time we had

Both of us drafted short essays, attached a carefully selected picture, and sent it off to OSS.

The prizes were as follows, per the contest rules:

Grand Prize: Gift Certificate for one (1) six nights/seven days BVI charter aboard Moorings 40’ monohull or catamaran in 2024. Additionally, you will receive a $500 Gift Certificate from Scrub Island Resort, Spa & Marina to use during your charter week.

First Place: One (1) $1,500 Gift Certificate to apply toward an Offshore Sailing School course taken and completed between April 1 and December 14, 2024.

Second Place: Copy of Onne van der Wal’s SAILING coffee table book.

The entries were judged by a three-person panel and the winners were announced at the Sailboat Show in Annapolis, MD, on October 14, 2023.

Kent’s submission:

Along with the picture above, Kent submitted the following:

Sailing is at the intersection of all I am seeking in life. The exhilaration of travel powered only by nature. The opportunity to see new and beautiful places and meet interesting people. The mental and physical challenge to keep my mind and body healthy.

Our OSS experience was incredible preparation for a lifetime of sailing, and more. It was a warm welcome to the family of sailors by experts who have experienced this joy. We have charted a course for our next chapter in life—and our newfound mentors have shown us the world of opportunity that lies before us.

They announced their winners and Kent won second place!
